How to care for curls.
Five things curls need from wash day to styling.
Gentle cleansing
Curls dry out quickly. Use a gentle or micellar curl shampoo and focus on the scalp.
Lots of moisture
Curl creams with shea butter or hibiscus keep curls soft and defined. Apply to very wet hair.
Define with jelly or mousse
Curl jelly gives definition and hold, curl mousse gives volume and bounce. Scrunch it in, never comb through.
Dry without friction
Scrunch with a cotton T-shirt or microfibre towel and let curls air-dry or use a diffuser on low heat.
Waves with sea salt
For beach waves, spray sea salt spray onto damp hair, scrunch and let it dry.
Questions about curly and wavy hair.
Which products do curls need?
A gentle shampoo, a rich conditioner or curl cream and a styling product for definition such as curl jelly or mousse.
Curl cream or curl jelly?
Curl cream cares and softens, curl jelly defines and holds. Many people use both, cream first and jelly on top.
How do I get defined curls?
Apply products to very wet hair, scrunch upwards, do not touch the curls while they dry and scrunch out the hold at the end.
How often should curly hair be washed?
Two to three times a week is enough for most curls. Refresh in between with water and a little curl cream.
How do I get beach waves?
Sea salt spray on damp hair, scrunch, twist a few strands and let them air-dry.
